“A neglected mid-century box was transformed into a colourful retreat that suits a creative couple’s post-Covid lifestyle to a tee. The new milieu undeniably fosters creativity.”

An artist-musician couple and their equally creative son found a jewel in the rough – a dark, drab mid-century hillside home with spectacular views of two oceans. The one-storey house was dark and cramped, but it contained so much potential.

The clients had a clear vision of what they needed: an art room, musician’s studio, home office, and master suite. They also possessed a strong aesthetic point-of-view and an amazing collection of colourful art and furnishings. What they did not have was a large budget. studioSALT devised a plan that minimized construction while opening up the ground floor and adding a spacious suite on a new second floor. Each floor contained its own deck.

The new staircase was an important element, as it needed to be design worthy, yet not compete with the bold colours and patterns in the dining-lounge area. The floating treads look effortless but were the result of careful construction detailing and craftsmanship.
